Pharmacy Update September 2021
Important Notice: Ivermectin
There has been a rapid increase in Ivermectin prescriptions, along with reports of severe illnesses associated with products that contain this drug. Ivermectin is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription drug that is used to treat certain types of infections caused by internal and external parasites.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the dispensing of this drug by retail pharmacies. However, due to potential risks and insufficient data, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not approve the use of Ivermectin for prevention or treatment of COVID-19.
As a result, PAI is taking a multifaceted approach to assure proper prescribing and usage of Ivermectin among our providers and members. We are instituting the following utilization management programs:
- Quantity Management: QL (#20 tabs/90 days) is effective as of 9/10/21.
- Prior Authorization will be effective 9/24/2021. The criteria will be straightforward and require documentation of use per FDA label indication.
Additionally, providers who exhibit high patterns of Ivermectin prescribing will be subject to quality review by the health plan.
PAI continues to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated. The COVID-19 vaccinations are safe and the most effective means to prevent infection and protect against severe disease.
